Cinnamon Roll Pancakes

Now about those pancakes I mentioned earlier.
As you know, Father's Day was a success. It's success was thanks to two little things:

This sweet little baby...
And these sweet little babies...
Cinnamon Roll Pancakes
All of the gooey, cinnamony, cream-cheesy goodness you would expect from a cinnamon roll in perfect pancake form. I followed the recipe and step by step directions from this blog.

I mean yes, they exceed one's weekly recommended caloric intake (and I may or may not have served them next to a side of bacon-- Paula Dean would be so proud) but that's what these holidays are for! A day to celebrate and spoil the one's you love most. Now I'm looking for another reason to make these pancakes and enjoy them guilt free. Thank goodness my birthday is only a few days away... and the 4th of July is right around the corner...

Father's Day

I believe that Jakob thoroughly enjoyed his first Father's Day. Calvin and I woke him up with breakfast in bed (cinnamon roll pancakes- Omg- so good they deserve their own post!!).
Cal read his Dad a heroic tale and gave him his first box of Duplos. Yes, they really are a gift for Jakob as he has been talking about playing Legos with his son since before he was born. The two had a grand old time lounging around together.
The rest of the day was spent relaxing as a family and letting our own fathers know how much we love them.
I think it goes without saying that Calvin is one lucky guy to have such an amazing father.
Happy first Father's Day Jakob!!

Sweetness

Looks like someone inherited his Mama's sweet tooth...
Cal's newest love- watermelon!
He can't get enough of the sweet stuff. Can you blame him? It's pretty much the sweetest food you can eat. Next up- sugar cubes. Hah!

Sittin' Pretty

Guess who's sitting up these days?!
Good guess.
I can hardly keep up with the little man. One day he is rolling around like it ain't no thang and the next he decides to go ahead and sit up!
That's okay Mom, I don't need your help
any more, thankyouverymuch.
I'm an independent baby.

I have to say, I think I am enjoying these new milestones just as much as he is. Independence for him equals independence for me (ie: laundry folding with both of my hands). He can now happily move around to locate the toy/object/dog-tail that he really wants- a skill that we all appreciate. And while he loves trying out his new tricks, he also seems pleased as punch to just lie on the floor and laugh at himself in the mirror. Trust me- it's adorable.
I am trying my best to just sit back and enjoy this independent yet less mobile time, fully aware of what comes next..CRAWLING! My home and my patience are nowhere near ready for the baby-proofing era of child rearing. For now, I'll patiently wait for the baby wrangling and take a nice long pause to enjoy the simplicity of this sweet little phase.
I'm hoping Cal agrees with the plan!

Swimming Lessons

Cal took his first dip in a swimming pool last week. We met up at a hotel with Jakob's cousin, his wife, and their three little kiddos as well as cousin Sawyer and the crew. Everyone had a great time catching up and splashing in the pool. While Cal was cautious at first, he warmed up after a minute and seemed to love stretching out in the water.

Although the pool was fun, I think he enjoyed getting naked and kicking around in a dry towel even more.
A good swim can wear anyone out.
Here's our attempt at getting all of the kids to pose for a quick photo.

Gotta love wild day with the cousins!

Month Five

We have had a great month! Calvin is becoming happier and happier by the minute. Fussy, whiny Cal has been replaced by belly laughing, squealy Cal- a change I could not be any more excited about! He is such a joy these days and is so fun to be around. I love this kid!

We filled our month with a Mother's Day celebration, a visit from Aunt Rebecca, a weekend with each set of grandparents, a few days at the beach, and as always, countless walks around the neighborhood. Here is the smiley guy in all of his happy glory...

FIVE MONTHS
For your comparison...
FOUR MONTHS
Here are a few of Cal's preferences these days...
Stats:
While he does not have an official weigh-in this month, I would think he is in the 14+ pound range. His round cheeks are growing daily and he is starting to get "rubber band rolls"- a fat baby signature! He continues to wear 3-6 month clothes but will be graduating soon to some bigger duds. The summer calls for roomier clothes!

Eating:
As you may have read, we introduced Cal to solid foods a few weeks ago. So far, he has tried mangoes, carrots, and bananas. Since we are still just giving him food for fun, he tries out solids once or twice a week. Some days he is super interested in it, other days not so much. While he still has no teeth, he seems to be getting closer to teething as the already copious drool is increasing and his love for chewing on EVERYTHING is apparent. He continues to nurse several times a day and takes bottles like a champ whenever nursing is just not enough. When it comes to eating, he couldn't be more easy going. I'm thankful.

Sleeping:
I feel like a good sleeping schedule is always a work in progress around here. Last month, naps were a disaster. This month, as the napping got better (but still limited to short 20 mins naps), he began waking up more and more at night. Apparently, morning starts around 4am in the Ondrey house- we just didn't get the memo. He wakes up happy and ready to play. Since I typically go to bed around 1am after work, 4am is WAY to early to be getting up. We are working on it. He is finally napping in his big crib in his room during the day (as well as his swing/carseat/stroller). We will be working on transitioning him to his crib at night this month. I assure you, this transition will be much harder on me than him but is necessary in everyone getting some good sleep. I'm going to miss the little guy with him sleeping all the way down the long dark hallway.. it seems so far away! Pray for me.

Milestones:
This month has been full of milestones. In the last four weeks Cal has learned to roll from tummy to back, sit with minimal assistance and hold his bottle independently. He seems like such a big boy. He rubs his eyes when he is tired, smiles when he hears people laughing and falls asleep holding his blanket (spare me the SIDS lecture- I take it away after a few minutes :)

With teething just around the corner, Cal's favorite pastime has been gnawing on frozen baby toys- a refreshing treat on a warm summer day.  Also, check out the last of his "newborn hair".
My sweet little Alfalfa. The rest of his "long" brown hair has fallen out and is has been replaced by some serious blond fuzz. Cutie!!

Swinger

Calvin's latest and greatest love interest is the swing. The boy cannot get enough of it! We have been spending our days outside lately wandering the neighborhood in search of the perfect swing. Thankfully, we have several nearby parks to choose from. Last weekend, Cal brought his grandparents and Auntie Sar to the park to show off his skills. Everyone had a great time. Whoever says parks are just for kids clearly hasn't had a good swing lately!

Bonding

Here are the boys enjoying a little father/son bonding time.
Melts my heart.
